Definition • A writing piece based on an actual event in a time in history.
The Elements • Characters: The characters were based on someone who lived in that time period. • Examples: slaves, soldiers, towns people, gladiators, butter churners, etc.
The Elements • Plot: Historical events that happen in our past time.
The Elements • Setting: Set in the past and in a historical time period. • Most often, the setting is dark and gloomy, but not always.
The Elements THEME: These are some typical themes for historical fiction: • Freedom • Culture • Tragedy • Courage • Challenge • Revenge • Heroism • Power • Survival • Conflict • Jealousy • Justice
An Example of Historical Fiction • In the late 1861 the Civil War was in pursuit. As I was running across the field, I heard “Fire!” then “Bam!” That’s when I came across a sweaty, bloody man in agony almost at his death. My eyes started to tear because he was once my friend, but I new I must move on. Then I heard the words retreat, retreat as the other team fled to their home town, and I new we finally succeeded.
