President John Broderick, August 24, 2010 Norfolk in the front-line battle against rising sea levels Sea Level Rise and Acceleration Most Viewed Paper for April 2013 The paper by Tal Ezer, Larry Atkinson, William Corlett and Jose Blanco, entitled “Gulf Stream's induced sea level rise and variability along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast,” This paper has lead to many more researchers examining sea level rise rates in coastal areas. Sea Level Rise Adaptation Forums Partnership with Virginia Sea Grant and the Hampton Roads Regional Planning District Hiring in CCSLRI • Consequences of SLR to Virginia; correlate with party affiliation • Lack of consensus on nature of SLR and limited funding are potential barriers to SLR policy making • State and local level planning most effective policy solutions • Difference on who should take the lead to address SLR policy making in Virginia • Republicans indicate that state agencies lead, Democrats indicate that federal government should lead. Adaptation: Notes from the Field Visiting Fellow Dr. Diane Horn from Birkbeck College in London is collaborating with Dr. Michael McShane. They compared flood insurance systems in the US and UK.. A paper will soon be published in Nature – Climate Change titled “Flood Insurance: A Tale of Two Countries.” Seawalls and pumping stations have protected Downtown Norfolk and led to economic development. Future updates to this structure and others will depend on SLR projections.
