LANCE Data Products Which LANCE elements do you use? MODIS Terra and Aqua NRTPS Which data products do you download? Level-2 surface reflectance Level-2 cloud mask Level-1B geolocation Are these products downloaded continuously or periodically? Continuously 2
LANCE Data Products • Do you obtain the data from the ftp server or by subscription? • FTP server • Do you use LANCE tools to generate derived products (e.g. parameter, geographic sub-setting)? • No, LANCE data are input to the eMODIS production system for further processing 3
Applications What applications are serviced by the LANCE data you download? NDVI composites for: FEWS NET detection of agricultural drought and harvest assessments U.S. drought monitoring (VegDRI) USFS Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center USDA NASS crop yield analyses, as needed USGS phenology studies 4
Applications Please describe any value-added products you generate? NRT 10-day NDVI composites every pentad (~5 days) over Africa, Central America and the Caribbean (Asia and South America planned) NRT 7- and 14-day NDVI composites over CONUS 5
Applications • Do you distribute products to other users? Yes: • FEWS NET partners • UNL National Drought Mitigation Center • US Drought Monitor authors • USDM is a key information product for NIDIS • USDA USFS • USDA NASS 6

Am./Caribbean) • Historical • LAADS Level-2 Surface Reflectance • Final product delivered within 3-10 days of acquisition • Central America / Caribbean • 2000-present (Terra mission record complete) • Africa / Madagascar • 2000-2001 (Terra mission record in progress)

VegDRI 11
Who is using VegDRI? National Weather Service Drought Reports - Kansas U.S. Drought Monitor authors Arizona Drought Monitor Report New Mexico Drought Status Report
Latency How critical is the 3-hour latency to your application(s)? Critical Would you application benefit from reduced latency and, if so, what latency would be desirable? 3 hour latency is adequate 13
Latency • Can you identify new applications that are not presently serviced by LANCE if the latency could be reduced? Land Surface Temperature Applications for: • Crop evapotranspiration for FEWS NET • Malaria early warning - vectorial capacity modeling 14
Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEB) Seasonal ETa and Anomalies
Latency 17
Comments on the Present LANCE System Are there any features of the present system that you find particularly useful? Direct FTP access to data within 3 hours is obviously attractive, and the retention period is particularly useful in the event of troubleshooting or reprocessing Do you make use of the LANCE website, and, if so, what pages do you find particularly useful? Finding contact information for questions about access configurations, Collection 6 planning, data retention times, and general background information A referral point for cooperators interested in learning more about LANCE 18
Comments on the Present LANCE System • Do you have any criticisms of the present LANCE system? Have you been particularly impacted by system downtime or degraded service? • No, LANCE has been very reliable • Have you received adequate information concerning the status of the system and system changes? • Yes, notifications were helpful, especially at the beginning of the project 19
Future Changes Do you have any suggestions for modifications or changes to the current system over the next 12 months? New Products? New Services? Websites? Can you suggest any cross-element changes? LST applications for crop ET and malaria modeling What applications would these changes support and can you estimate the size of the potential user community? Famine and malaria early warning communities across Africa Can you suggest any longer-range changes? The existing LANCE system interfaces well with USGS eMODIS to meet NDVI imagery requirements; future instruments? We believe that LST data could similarly be processed in an expedited way for crop ET and malaria model applications 20
