3. There are а number of tunnels beneath the River Thames, such as underground railway lines, but the most interesting are certainly the Thames foot tunnels.

10. The London Underground also utilizes a unique map, designed by Harry Beck in 1933. The tube map, with its schematic non-geographical layout and colour-coded lines, is considered a design classic, and many other transport maps worldwide have been influenced by it.

11. The nickname of the London underground "the Tube" comes from the circular tube-like tunnels and platforms through which the trains travel.

14. The London Underground also has several “ghost stations,” Tube stations which are no longer used although they still exist. These disused stations were closed for various reasons. Some of them are like time capsules perfectly capturing the moment at which they were closed, while others have been more or less erased from history. Tours of the disused stations are sometimes held, and are an interesting look into the heart of the subway system.

15. During the war, eight London deep-level bomb shelters were constructed under stations to be used as shelters. Some stations were converted into government offices: for example, Down street was used for the headquarters of the Railway Executive Committee and was also used for meetings of the War Cabinet; Brompton Road was used as a control room for anti-aircraft guns.
