Living and Aging in Place The Use of Home Automation for the Elderly and Disabled Individuals
Assistive Domotics important? • 13% of population in 2010 was over 65 • By 2030 9 million Americans over 85 years old. • Losing their independence and having to live in a skilled nursing facility is a huge fear of individuals of advanced stage, and those with disabilities. • Assistive domotics can allow or prolong independence
Why is this a new issue? • Care for the elderly and disabled used to be done by a stay-at-home individual but the change in economics requiring two income families has changed that.
Individuals want to remain at home but need help with life . . .How do we help them stay indipendent?
Why? • “The number one benefit of technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn’t think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.” Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO
