  1. Greek and Indian Social Structures Similarities • Like the India, Greece divided the social classes into four main categories. The Upper, Middle, Lower classes and slaves. • The middle class of Greece was much like the Indian Vaishyas, they free men who often worked as craftsmen, tradesmen, doctors and artists. • In both social structures the lowest class the slaves could never achieve the highest point in the class systems. • Both used their slaves for remedial labor • The Lower class of Greece was made of free men who had Differences • India’s caste system was based more on religious belief where as the Greek system was based more on politics. • The upper of Greece consisted of about 300 established families and in order to be apart of this class a person had to be a citizen and not have a job. • Unlike India, Greece saw the upper class as a necessity in order to have a standard of good taste, encouragement of arts and sciences and a civilization. • Greeks used slaves as clerks, attendants, minor officials, and policemen and India only used them for labor. • The Greeks were able to climb the social ladder from slave all the way to the middle class but the Indian caste system believed the only way to better your social status was through reincarnation
