Against Use of Phones in Class Numan Ali Section-008
Distraction!!! • Texting/Surfing the web • Hinders learning in class • Places higher priority on miscellaneous activities rather than education • Disrespectful to professor and classmates
History of Phones • 1983 – Motorola unveils DynaTAC 8000X • First truly portable cellular phone • 1990’s – phones were working on GSM, IS-36 (TDMA), and IS-95 (CDMA) • Networks in USA by 1990; in Europe by 1991. • 2000’s – 3G phones available on all networks • SMS, e-mail, and internet access • Streaming radio and TV, as well as Wi-Fi access
History of Classrooms • Past • Rare to find a cell phone in class • Present • Phones access is all-too available • Future • ???
Plagiarism and Cheating • Internet Access = information at your fingertips • Leads to ‘cutting corners’ • Texting = way of communicating with classmates • Education system is degraded • Use the way of all means to succeed • Stricter rules to stop plagiarism and cheating from happening
Technology Advancement • Projectors, computers used in classes • Power point presentations used to teach students • Class Capture allows students to sign into class from anywhere with internet access • Access to presentations from phones to use during exams • Access to information that should not be available to students at that time
What To Do • Clearly state in the syllabus the phone policy and enforce it • Teach the ethics regarding using phones when someone is speaking towards you; not business savvy • In terms of business manners, no conversation should be more important than the one you are currently having, a one-way conversation, with your professor
