Multimedia • Video • IPTV • Underdevelopment by Microsoft • Being tested in Switzerland by Swisscom/Bluewin • Pay-TV service over broadband • Digital TV, Live and On-Demand, Interactive program guides, managed content, web, email, IM • Based on Windows Media 9 • About 2x Compression over MPEG-4 • Thus usable over standard ADSL

Multimedia • Video • Streaming video using Web Cameras • Yahoo IM has offered streaming video since 2001 • MSN Messenger since March, 2003 • AOL is currently testing streaming web camera via AIM and as part of it’s proprietary online service • Linksys is putting out a new wireless web camera that does not require the use of a computer • Closed Captioning on Streaming Media • AOL is currently developing this technology for it’s deaf subscribers

  6. Security • Viruses • There have been several major computer virus outbreaks this last year • All major computer viruses are now transmitted over the Internet • Email has become a primary transmitter of viruses • Email providers are now blocking viruses before they reach consumers computers

  7. Security • Viruses • AOL has published some statistics on email viruses that it has blocked • In the last year AOL has blocked over 500 Million email viruses • The average user will get a virus infected email once every 2 weeks • 300 new viruses are identified every week

SPAM • This is by far the biggest newsmaker in Internet technology at this time • PEW Internet Project – SPAM Study • 75% are bothered by their inability to stop SPAM • 80% are bothered by dishonest SPAM • 76% are bothered by offensive and obscene SPAM • 30% are afraid that SPAM blockers will block non-SPAM email • 25% of Internet users say SPAM has reduced their email use

  9. SPAM • SPAM filtering • Many Client-side applications already available • SPAM will soon be fought Server-side as well • MSN will be adding SpamKiller to it’s new MSN Premium Service in Winter 2003 • AOL is already SPAM filtering and reports that 2.4 billion SPAM emails are blocked a day

SPAM • Other Anti-SPAM initiatives • Many States have enacted some form of Anti-SPAM legislation • AOL, Microsoft and others have been lobbying Congress for Federal Anti-SPAM laws • The following bans on SPAM tactics are under review by the Federal Government • Misleading Subjects • Sexually Explicit (without a label) • Mass Mailing using addresses collected by automated programs or recombination techniques • Use of false return addresses

  11. Extending the Internet • Wireless Web • Most Wireless phone providers also offer wireless web • Wireless IM • AOL is partnering with several providers to offer AIM and ICQ on wireless phones • Hotspots • Hotels, Airports, Convention Centers, Truck Stops and Cafes

Extending the Internet • IP Telephony • Poland’s Border guard is installing a 6,500 phone IP Telephony System • Remote Surgery • Using a highly reliable VPN based on Cisco MPLS the first telerobotics surgery took place in Canada • Internet Schools • In Hong Kong 70,000 primary and secondary school students have access to 38 multimedia enriched courses

Extending the Internet • Centrelink • The Australian government has built a web portal that links citizens to information, programs and services from 25 national and local government agencies • This system has saved Australia $500 million dollars over 5 year and has greatly improved customer service • Microsoft Xbox • Currently Online Gaming • Soon to have Online Music, Photos, Karaoke, slide shows and more
