Overview • funded by EC ( instrument SSA FP6 ) • duration: 15months • start: 01/02/2006 • end: 30/04/2007 • 3 main beneficiary regions: • Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania • Eastern Europe - Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova • Southern Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan,Georgia
Objectives • identification of user communitiesand their requirements • identification of availability of national dark fibre infrastructure • preparing case studies with economical analysis of fibre network development • results dissemination and raisingawareness
User communities • user requirements analysis • over 960 research and education institutions • 700 higher education institutions • 129 cities • information about scientific institutions in beneficiary countries is available in: • D1.1 ”Users database” • D1.4 ”Requirements of user communities”
User communities:Lithuanian example • main R&E centers: • Kaunas, Vilnius, Siaulai,Moletai, Panevezys and Klaipeda Connection needs of institutions in Lithuania: 3-30 Mbps 19% > 300 Mbps 31% 30-300 Mbps 50%
Fiber availabilityanalysis • RFI sent to 52 DF owners and constructors identified in all beneficiary countries: • 17 not answered • 8 refusals • 27 answers • DF freely available in Baltic States • monopoly situation in Belarus (by 2008) • in Moldova and South Caucasus (SC) countries acquiring DF is nearly impossible
Legal and political analysis • analysis of legal and political situation in beneficiary countries: • limitations in use of DF exist in SC countries, Belarus and Ukraine • no ICT strategy in Armenia, Georgia and Latvia • limitations for international connectivity in SC region and Belarus • legal & political issues are described in D2.3 ”Legal and political environment of NRENs” • issues related to SC region are described in D2.2 ”Special issues related to Southern Caucasus”
Case studies • plans of the optical network based on information about research and education centers in beneficiary countries and about fiber availability in beneficiary countries • in cases where acquiring DF is not available lease of bandwidth is considered • approximately 11 000 km of DF are needed • approximately 4500 km of leased lines are needed • detailed description is available in D3.1 ”Case Studies”
Case studies:Lithuanian example • 1 Gbps current GÉANT2 connectivity • 10 Gbps GÉANT2 connectivity requiredfor 2009 • 10 Gbps main backbone planned • approx. 1900 km of DF are needed • leasing / purchasing of DF • possible construction of DF
