SEEd’s National Sustainability Curriculum Project A collaborative inquiry Oct 2011 – Sept 2013
Phase A. Curriculum Gatherings Key Features: • Bottom up/local – all over the UK if wanted • Schools twilight sessions one way to engage schools • Educators/NGOs/networks input needed • Include new research • New sustainability challenges? • Cross curricular approaches • International examples – UNESCO Advisor Prof C Hopkins • Workplace skills needed for teachers/educators
Phase B. Developing Curriculum Frameworks Needs to consider: • Not a new subject – how to incorporate into subjects • Look at examples – at all scales, in school or nationally • What will work with the new National Curriculum for teachers? • Test it out with teachers – but a pick and mix model • Not just content – the how you teach this or create students experiences • Scope and sequence early years to graduate
Phase C. Build capacity (Apr 2013 -) Developing a nationwide approach to: • Designing your own local school curriculum • Building understandings of SD • Building teacher competencies • Tracking impact/evidence
Discussion • What are your first thoughts about this project? • What examples, case studies etc do you know of? • What are the best ways of engaging people in this? • Young people’s entitlement to engage? How should we do this?
