Basic Information • Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 19, 1931 • was poor/in poverty most of his early life • always was interested in literature and writing when he was young • quit school at age of 13 • somehow still went to New York University • wife named Ellen • currently living in Connecticut • wrote book called Angela’s Ashes
About His Family • Family was unable to get jobs because of the depression • moved to Ireland, however suffered more poverty • his father spent money on drinking, and eventually abandoned family • 3 of 7 children died of disease while in Ireland
Education • after the Korean War, Mccourt was able to pursue college education at G.I. Bill • -never attended high school • -persuaded admissions office to accept him into New York University • -after graduating Frank taught at New York Public School system • -when he taught, he tried to help students realize how important their life is • -taught in NYC for thirty years

Angela’s Ashes Synopsis • Plot • - Frank describes the overview of his miserable life as he lives in poverty with odd parents • - He also talks about a disease (Typhoid Fever) spreading throughout the town • - Frank then talks about his parents history before they gave birth to his siblings and he • - Malachy McCourt, Frank’s father, used to work for the IRA and thus committed a crime which put his life on a death sentence, He ran away to the U.S. to avoid being executed • - He brought along his regular drinking habits to slowly kill himself • - Angela Sheehan, the mother of Frank, was a woman who grew up in the slums and her father ran away after leaving her with a child • - Angela then travels to the U.S. to visit Malachy who is in jail service for 3 months, they then get married and give birth Frank • - The family lived in poverty, they were broke and dwelled in slums due to their low income • - For the most part, Frank enjoys his childhood, he has good memories with his dad • - Malachy continuously drinks and spends most of the family’s money in a bar causing a lot of hunger between the different members, he thus loses many jobs • - Margaret, one of Frank’s sisters temporarily stops Frank from drinking but soon dies of the disease • - Angela and Malachy leave the family due to the great depression
