  2. What is Project Management? • A Project is a temporary business venture, with a defined goal. It has a beginning (scope), a middle (execution) and an end (closeout). • Project Management--Application of techniques to optimize results on a project. • There is a standard Project Management Body of Knowledge.

  4. Aspiring Project Managers Need to: • Get the Job • Credentials from the Project Management Institute (PMI)—Global Standard • PMP—Requires Training, Experience • CAPM—Requires Training Only • Keep the Job • Skills Education

  5. Why All the Demand for the Credential? • The industrial community has concluded that PMI Certified Project Managers perform better than uncertified project managers. There is some academic work to support this. • Certification is a global standard, tested by an independent certifying body.

What is the Global Credential? • Global Standard-Setting Organization—Project Management Institute (PMI) • Two credentials: • PMP—Test PLUS Experience Requirement • CAPM—Test BUT No Experience Requirement (Apprentice) • Providers must become Registered with PMI. We can easily become a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P).

Student Profile (from PMI) • Most students are from IT industry and the U.S.A. has the largest concentration of students • Most students came from the information technology industry, followed distantly by government. Significantly more students were from IT in 2009 than in 2008 (79% vs. 71%)*. • Project management training has increased in the construction, energy, government and manufacturing industries compared to prior years. Students from these industries have significantly increased. • Construction Growth Rate of 27% vs. 20%* in ‘07 • Energy 23% vs. 15%* in ‘07 • Government 38% vs. 30%* in ‘07 • Manufacturing 24% vs. 16%* in ‘08 • The vast majority of students trained by R.E.Ps come from the United States. * At a 95% level of confidence

Ramapo College Project Management Certificate Proposal • Tuition: $3,800. • Total Contact Hours: 96 • Certificate Program--Non-Credit Bearing Delivery: Primarily In-Class plus some Hybrid Components. • Four Courses. MS Project and Visio included in course #1. • Cost Detail: $950 Per Course x 4 Courses • Positioning: More comprehensive, up to date program than Patterson or Rutgers, at a lower price point than the NJIT or Stevens Masters programs.

Awards • Upon student completion of the course sequence, Ramapo will award aCertificate in Project Management from the Anisfield School of Business at Ramapo College of New Jersey. • Upon completion of the course sequence, students will be qualified to sit for the PMI standardized CAPM and PMP Exam. The choice of exam is determined by experience.

Delivery • Offer as a Hybrid course • Convenient times during • Summer sessions • Friday evenings and/or Saturdays during the academic year. • We plan to mix RCNJ students with experienced project professionals to • Expose RCNJ students to the experiences of seasoned professionals • Allow opportunities for job networking to RCNJ students.

  17. Financials • Key assumption: Attract 30 students in its first year (AY 10-11) and increase to 55 students in year 4. • We plan to advertise and promote. The program is designed for completion in a single year, so we will need continuing advertising and promotion, as well as active enrollment management. • Program students will initially come from matriculated RCNJ students, and increasingly from non-matriculated students. • Program is planned to produce a positive contribution to the college in its first year, and a total contribution of more than $285,000 over the five year period.

Open Questions:Class Times and Content • When to Run the Courses? • Each course is 24 contact hours. 12 hours x 2 hours each? 8 meetings x 3 hours each? 6 meetings x 4 hours each? • Project Content--Student projects separate the high-quality, in-person classes from the online ones. Format? Are there opportunities in the community?
