3. 5th Grade Math In Grade 5, the Common Core standards state that instructional time should focus on three critical areas: developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimals into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and 3. developing understanding of volume.

5. 6th Grade Math In Grade 6, the Common Core standards state that instructional time should focus on four critical areas: connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and developing understanding of statistical thinking.

7. Grading Math Assessments 40% Math Facts 30% Homework 15% Classwork and Participation 15% Grade book will be updatedweekly andwill be accessible in Parent Portal and Student Portal NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED unless a student was absent to get the assignment or absent to turn it in

8. Math Materials A Composition Notebook – this is where students take Math notes, write examples of how to solve problems (Problem of the Day), define vocabulary w/examples. They should review their notes every night and use to study for assessments. A Spiral Notebook - this is where students do their homework problems from their textbook (all work must be shown). Students should reference their Composition Notebook when working on homework. Sharpened pencils Extra materials used periodically: scissors, glue, tape, index cards, highlighter, red pen, coloring materials

9. Sixth Grade Social Studies The Sixth Grade curriculum has the students step back into the ancient world while studying the archaeology of early man followed by investigations into the cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and Mesoamerica. These civilizations all share components of culture: Geography Economics Religion The Arts Communication Technology By examining these ancient peoples, students come to understand the links between past and present societies, with each building on others’ accomplishments, failures, and advances in technology. Teachers target common misunderstandings held by students.

Classroom Rules Stay on task Talk politely and work quietly Always follow directions and procedures Respect everyone and everything In addition to the rules, Murray Language Academy is a CHAMPS school.  The CHAMPS acronym stands for "Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, and Participation."Each major classroom genre of activity or transition has a CHAMPS procedure associated with to help students know and understand what the teacher expects of them.  We will be reinforcing this program and its elements during the first several weeks of school and will expect full adherence to this program by all of all my students.

11. Behavior Management System Each student is expected to follow the rules of the classroom and school. Consequences for misbehavior are: 1stwarning- reprimand 2ndwarning- reflection sheet and conference with teacher 3rdwarning- contact w parent (white slip) Rewards: Students will earn incentives for displaying positive behavior, turning in homework, and attendance. A raffle will be held every other Friday, sometimes more often.

Special Classes Students will have 7-45 minspecial classes each week: World Language - 3x week Library - 1x week PE – 5th Gr 2x week, 6th Gr 1x week Art – 5th Gr 1x week, 6th Gr 2x week * On P.E. days please make sure your child wears gym shoes and dresses appropriately. If they do not dress appropriately they will have to sit out of P.E. and this does effect their grade.

SNACKS Since lunch is later in the afternoon for 5th/6th grade students, 1:25pm for 6th Graders 1:45pm for 5th Graders we have built in a snack time in the morning for the students to have in class. There is a designated time for each class to have their snack. We ask that you send your child with a nutritious snack that will hold them over til lunch. This snack can be …. Fruit raisins applesauce Yogurt carrots w/ranch dressing almonds celery Apple slices/peanut butter NO CHIPS, COOKIES, CANDY or BEVERAGES Snack time is limited to 5 minutes, while the students are still working, reading or thinking

In addition, students will … • Learn how to access their CPS Email and use a Google Share document • Learn how to access the Student Portal and create their own triggers • Learn how to access their textbook online • Learn how to create a Power Point and become more comfortable with creating one (insert music, videos)

19. Assessments NWEA –Fall, Spring PARCC – March 2015 Quizzes after 2-3 Math Concepts Timed Multiplication/Division tests twice a month, once you reach 100% you no longer are tested on them for the quarter

20. Parent Involvement We will be working with room parents this year. These parents will help organize special projects and events. All parents are important to me. No one will be left out. Volunteers will be called during the year to help with various activities. Occasionally you will receive a note or a call from me for help on various activities or assistance in our classroom.
