  1. Easy Shopping A simpler way to shop!

  2. System Description • The system is made up of three different modules: • Product • Two different types of identification • Passive RF ID • Bar Code • Shopping Cart • Computing system for product identification and real time price update • LCD, displaying product description and total price • RF link to communicate with checkout counter • Checkout Counter • RF link to communicate with shopping cart • Product Database Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  3. Purpose • Facilitate people’s shopping • Real time price update • Audible (multilanguage) description (price, product name, etc.) • Eliminate long/tedious lines • Uploading final price to checkout counter, so that customer only needs to pay (no need to scan everything) • Possible extension • Advertisement opportunities • Multilanguage Display Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  4. Block diagram Product Shopping Cart Checkout Counter Bar codes Or RF ID’s Micro controller Bar code scanner LCD RF interface Keypad Speaker Power supply Micro Controller RF interface LCD Signal Cancellation Power supply Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  5. Product • Bar code will be the product Id, to identify product information (Price, sale information, manufacturer and name of product). • RF ID, will be used in the same idea but wireless, so that the consumer does not need to scan the item, simply put it in the cart. • RF ID will be a passive component, so is safer, cheaper and • less power consumption. Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  6. Shopping Cart • Micro Controller: Will be using an HC11/12 to handle all the processes of actualize the price on the LCD, data transmit to cash register, speaker control and user interface. • Barcode Scanner • LCD: Display product information, total price with tax included, advertisements and sales information. • RF interface: Transmitter and Transceiver • Transmitter: Will be used to send the information to the cash • register. • Transceiver : Send a signal to the RF ID, and receive the • product id. Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  7. Shopping Cart • Keypad: Clear product, in case needed, input card information, • to activate audio. • Speaker: To output product information and price as audio for • those who need it. It will have audio output in English, Spanish • French and German • Power Supply: • Battery (12 volts, rechargeable) • Generator on the wheels • Recharge interface Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  8. Checkout Counter • Micro Controller: To interface with the RF and display the Price • LCD: Display the total amount to pay • RF interface: To receive the information from the cart • Signal cancellation: Send a signal to each item that has been purchased so that it does not trigger the alarm system • Power Supply: Standard AC supply Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  9. Labor and Reponsibilities • Michael Brogdon: Firmware and Software Development • Enrique Conde: Firmware and Software Development • Chad Gill: Hardware layout and design • Douglas Schuyler: Hardware layout and design, cart design Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  10. Schedule • CDR • Have every part we need ordered or received • Startup Code for Microcontrollers • Product ID with Bar code complete • LCD test code • Keypad test code • Bar code test code • Audio test code • Initial design of PCB completed and start manufacturing Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  11. Schedule • Milestone I • Shopping cart (itself) complete • Revision of PCB design • Product RF ID complete • Partial Integration • Communication links up and running • Hardware Drivers ready Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  12. Schedule • Milestone II • Final PCBs complete with parts installed • Shopping Cart complete with wiring and power supply • Checkout complete • Final testing and debug begins Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  13. Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  14. Risks and Contingency Plan • RF ID tags • Availability • Range and Power • Bar code scanner is the backup • PCBs • Design of board • Bugs in layout/connections • Time to manufacture • Debug Capstone, Spring 2oo6

  15. Risks and Contingency Plan • Shopping Cart • Generate enough power to recharge battery • Resistance (on wheels for customers) • Safety • Try to design better • Wireless Interfaces • Chance of link failing • Replacement parts Capstone, Spring 2oo6
