  2. TUNDRA Found just south of the Polar region Circles the North Pole A treeless region due to the permafrost Populated by shallow rooted grass & shrubs Long cold winter with a short spring and summer Small animals lots of insects in summer Migratory area for birds

  5. Caribou

  6. Taiga

  7. TAIGA/ NORTHERN CONIFEROUS FOREST Located just south of the Tundra , Northern Canada & Northern Russia Taiga is a Russian word for Forest Dominated by Coniferous Trees (Evergreens) Home to various large animals Long harsh winters, short summers Temp. Winter -65 F to 30 F Summer 20 F to 70 F Millions of insects in summer Long summer days, short winter days

  8. Taiga in Summer

  9. Taiga in Winter

  10. Moose Owl

  11. Taiga Snow Melt

  12. Rainbow in Alaska

  13. Grassland Tropical grasslands -- those closest to the equator are hot all year. Temperate grasslands -- farther from the equator and have both hot summers and harsh winters. Some areas have a wet season and a dry season Dominated by grasses with roots that reach deep underground In South America, grasslands are called "pampas"; in Europe, "steppes"; in Africa, "savannas". Grazing animals, rodents, snakes, birds & insects

  20. Deserts Not always hot! Depends on amount of precipitation. Located in the interior of continents Southwest of U.S. – Sahara in N. Africa – Gobi in China Outback of Australia Hot during day but cold at night Autotrophs are adapted to survive the lack of water Heterotrophs also adapted to the harsh conditions Many animals are nocturnal

  24. Camels Desert Bighorn Spotted Lizard

  25. Deciduous/Temperate Forest Eastern U.S., Mideast of S. America, East Coast of Australia, Europe, Eastern Russia, China Broad-leafed hardwood trees that lose leaves annually Mild winters and warm summers, long growing season Rich top soil Squirrels, mice, rabbits, deer, bears, many migratory birds Virginia is in this biome!

  32. Rainforest Equatorial regions of the world – Warm year round! WET! 200 – 400 cm precipitation/year Much of the precipitation is generated by the forest canopy Most biologically diverse biome Nutrient poor soil, most nutrients are tied up in living material Mature rainforests have tall leafy trees which almost totally shade the forest floor Shallow roots form thick surface mats

  40. Aquatic Biomes 2 Types Marine & Fresh Water

  41. Marine Biome Also called the Ocean Biome All of the oceans of the world Contains the largest Biomass (most living material) Most Biomass is microscopic called plankton 2 Zones- Photic (sunlight enters) & Aphotic (no light) Deep Water organisms have special adaptations

  42. The Ocean Zones

  44. Mammals Reptiles

  45. Killer Whale Breaching Shark Flying Shark?

  46. Bad Day?!

  47. Fresh Water Biomes Any body of fresh water! Lakes, streams, rivers, ponds, even large puddles! Exist all over the world, in all different environments. Some have fast moving water, some are stagnant. Some are frozen part of the year. Animals include freshwater fish, amphibians, mollusks, birds, river otters, snakes, etc. Many are small, but some are large.
