  2. What is Driver fatigue Driver fatigue is when you drive while tired. One of the symptoms is decreased ability to judge our own level of tiredness. Analysis of fatal crashes from the years 2004-2008 has shown that on average 14% of fatal crashes per year were likely to be due to fatigue. Furthermore an average of 17 fatalites and 125 injuries per year were due to fatigue related crashes.

Microsleeps • Driver fatigue causes microsleeps • These are literally when you fall asleep for a few seconds or even a few minutes • These are extremely dangerous when driving during a 4 second microsleep a car travelling at 100km/h will travel 111m while completely out of the drivers control. So you are far more likely to crash. • You cannot concentrate while fatigued making you more at risk to make mistakes while driving

  4. How is driver fatigue caused • Driver fatigue is caused by • Driving at night • Driving long distances without breaks • Driving sleep deprived • Driving when you would usually be sleeping 1-6 o’clock • Sleeping disorders such as sleep apnoea

How can it be prevented • To avoid driver fatigue you should get seven to eight hours of undisturbed sleep before long trips • Don’t travel for more than 8-10 hours each day • Take fifteen minute breaks every two hours get out of the car for fresh air and stretch your legs • Avoid eating fatty foods that can make you feel drowsy • If driving with others try to take turns and have someone tell you when you look tired • Avoid driving at night • Avoid alcohol and medicine because they cause drowsiness

  6. How to recognise driver fatigue • Signs include • Constant yayning • Drifting over lanes • Sore eyes • Trouble keeping head up • Delayed reactions • Daydreaming • Variations in driving speed • Difficulty remembering driving the last few kilometres
