Symbolism in “The Catcher in the Rye” Greg Raszewski
New York City In “The Catcher in the Rye,” New York City is the setting in the story, but also symbolizes the extreme isolation Holden feels. Even though Holden escapes to a huge city he feels even more depressed throughout many interactions with people. This symbol is important because it shows us the serious case of depression Holden faces through being isolated. Holden is very depressed due to his isolation and tries sparking up conversations with anyone he could for instance, the cab driver. “Well – take me to Edmont then,” I said. “Would you care to stop on the way and join me for a cocktail? On me, I'm loaded.” (79) In such desperate need to talk to someone Holden feels isolated in a gigantic city.
