Essential Questions • What were the three main motives for exploration? • Which explorers and countries were most noteworthy during this time? • What resulted from the voyages?
What were the three motives for exploration? • God: Wanting to Christianize heathens (especially Muslims), cultural superiority, “white man’s burden.” *Like U.S. Imperialism 2. Glory: Spirit of adventure and curiosity during renaissance, fame, nationalism. *Manifest Destiny, Turner thesis • Gold: Rulers who trade with Asia get rich and powerful. Merchants who sell Asian goods in Europe make a lot of money. *Trade today Previously unknown Asian goods in high demand since Crusades.
1. Europe Explores • Many events led to the closure of the Silk Road. • This led Europeans to find all water route to Asia!
Europe Explores • During the 1400s Europeans set out on an Age of Expoloration • Europeans looked past their borders to new land, waters, and new continents.
2. Active Explorers • 5 European countries were active in exploration: • Portugal – East and North Coast of Brazil • Spain – New Spain, Mexico, South America • England – New England, Southern Atlantic Coast • France – Caribbean, Northern Atlantic Coast • Netherlands - South America, Caribbean, New York
3. The Church’s Role Spain was able to get the most land in the New World -The Pope drew a Line of Demarcation to divide the New World between Spain and Portugal. -Most of Europe was Christian, Crusades were over. Pope wanted new souls for the church.
4. New Technology A-2 major inventions helped navigate a ship’s course over water. • 1. Astrolabe • 2. compass B- Navigators also improved their map-making techniques: Cartography
5. New Ships • The Portuguese designed a new ship called a Caravel it has: • Several masts instead of just one • A rudder to steer the ship’s course • Sits high on the water and stays close to shore MAST Rudder
6. Weapons used to Conquer • The Chinese gave the Europeans the power to fire a new weapon, Gunpowder • This new fire power allowed sailors to take captives and conquer new lands for their country without superior numbers of people! • This new invention gave the Europeans the power to conquer the world.
