Explore using operational-based climate-relevant indices, focusing on sub-surface metrics like ocean heat content and meridional transports. Collaborate with various centers to consolidate data on key variables for multi-centre products. Aim to have online metrics and products available by May 2012 for ocean synthesis and CLIVAR. Document and ensure quality control of past climate data metrics.

Metrics • Many past collections of indices from CLIVAR and GOV • Too many to do regularly • OOPC as example of online indices that has gained high visibility • Can we use this and put in place Operational based climate relevant indices? • Especially sub-surface
Metrics • Agree on near real time delivery (other things could be done eg every few years) • Ocean heat content upper 300m building on Yan Xue example • Regionally calculated indices (use OOPC SST areas) Could suggest some new ones, plus Maps • Monthly timescales • Meridional transports at 26N in Atlantic (AMOC) • Volume and heat • Lots of interest already. With monitoring system in place for volume • Other could include. • Sea level at tide gauge locations • Sea surface and upper ocean salinity • (surface fluxes?) • How and Who?? • Each centre to take on consolidating in gathering data for one variable
Metrics • Each centre to take on consolidating in gathering data for one variable • ECMWF, • MetO, • BMRC, Agreed to examine Upper ocean salinity from multiple centres • NCEP, Agreed to do upper ocean heat content • JMA, • GMAO, • Mercator, Agreed?? to manage tide gauge comparisons • UReading(AMOC), Agreed ton collect AMOC and heat transport data at 26N • CLS: ARMOR, SURCOOF • OOPC agreed to try hard to get resources if we send metrics data • Each collecting centre to write page on specific requirements . • Probably Monthly data feeds? • Aim should be to get multi-centre products online either via OOPC state of ocean site or a related site. Other options also possible • Timescales for action?
Metrics • Timescales for action? • Would like stuff online by May 2012 would give really good image of ocean synthesis community for Reanalysis conference and also CLIVAR SSG same time • Documents on variables distributed by end July 2011. • First metrics delivered to OOPC end October 2011 • Beyond this recommend subsurface T,S products on standard Levitus grid should be available at centres or centrally for going further • Would like to take other products forward on the basis of this eg. Surface flux metrics • WGSIP doing seasonal forecasting so skill score metrics covered • For past climate data i.e. syntheses we should focus on • History of metrics we are monitoring in real time • Fit to past data, eg O-B : Need to ensure good QC of past data
