  2. ~30 years of proposal writing has taught me to… • Break new ground – Propose new ideas that break new ground from your previous work of your Ph.D. and/or previous mentors • Discuss your ideas – Discuss your ideas with your mentor to flesh out obvious problems and avoid proposal “old’ work • Review your proposals – Get your proposal read and reviewed by an editor for style, grammar, typos, completeness and criteria • Focus your program – Focus your research enough to be technically solid yet broad enough to be flexible • Balance your workload – Always balance your work life with your personal life
