The Sun Also Rises Chapter 19 “Isn’t it pretty to think so?”
Opening Paragraph - Pg. 219 Details Connected to Theme • Children picking up rocket sticks • Sweeping the streets • Sprinkling them with a hose • Waiter tearing down the notices • Washing away the paper that stuck to the stone • “The fiesta was over.” THEME - Consequences – Pg, 232: “We had lunch and paid the bill. Montoya did not come near us. One of the maids brought the bill” (232). Question for further discussion: Is this a novel about consequences and facing consequences? (Jake’s betrayal, Brett’s trompering, Mike’s bankruptcy, Cohn’s loss of control). Textual Connection: “It seemed out of place to think of consequences during the fiesta” (158).
Theme – Exchange of Values Pg. 237 – Tipping and Difference Between Spain and France “ I hated to leave France. Life was so simple in France. I felt I was a fool to be going back to Spain. In Spain you could not tell about anything” (237). Implications? Why does Jake say this?
Jake in San Sebastian • Pg. 238-239 – Catharsis? Closely examine the details of the scene. • Pg. 241: “Everything was fresh and cool and damp in the early morning…” Interesting details in this paragraph – why? * Pg. 241- 242- “Floating, I saw only the sky and felt the drop and lift of the swells.” Rebirth?
Jake’s Tone and State of Mind • Pg. 243 – “That seemed to handle it. That was it. Send a girl off with one man. Introduce her to another to go with him. Now go and bring her back. And sign the wire with love. That was it all right. I went to lunch” (243). Questions to Consider: What is Jake’s tone here? What is Jake’s tone in the final line of the novel? How do we evaluate Jake’s character at the end? How can you support your evaluation?
Brett and Romero • Pg. 246-248 • Brett says that she made Romero leave, and she really doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. • But what really happened, and what does she really end up saying? Pg. 249 – Middle of Page – Evaluate this brief exchange.
The Closing Scene • Pg. 250-251 1. Compare this taxi cab scene to the one on pg. 33-34. What details are different? 2. Where is Jake mentally and emotionally at the end of the novel? 3. How does the final line connect to the purpose of the title of the novel?
