  3. Wise & Foolish women contrasted. • (Prov 14:1 NKJV) The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands. • (Prov 14:1 TLB) A wise woman builds her house, while a foolish woman tears hers down by her own efforts.

  4. Every wise woman builds her house • Adam Clarke: - By her prudent and industrious management she increases property in the family, furniture in the house, and food and raiment for her household. This is the true building of a house. The thriftless wife acts differently, and the opposite is the result. Household furniture, far from being increased, is dilapidated; and her household are ill-fed, ill-clothed, and worse educated.

  5. The good and wicked contrasted • (Prov 14:2 NKJV) He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him. • (Prov 14:2 NASB) He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, But he who is crooked in his ways despises Him.

  6. “By your words . . .” • (Prov 14:3 NKJV) In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, But the lips of the wise will preserve them. • (Prov 14:3 NASB) In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back,But the lips of the wise will preserve them.

  7. A clean barn produces no food. • (Prov 14:4 NKJV) Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; But much increase comes by the strength of an ox. • (Prov 14:4 NCV) When there are no oxen, no food is in the barn. But with a strong ox, much grain can be grown.

  8. Truth or Lies • (Prov 14:5 NKJV) A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies. • (Prov 14:5 NIV) A truthful witness does not deceive,but a false witness pours out lies.

  9. A lifetime of difference • (Prov 14:6 NKJV) A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,But knowledge is easy to him who understands. • (Prov 14:6 TLB) A mocker never finds the wisdom he claims he is looking for, yet it comes easily to the man with common sense.

  10. The Righteous Continue • (Prov 14:7 NKJV) Go from the presence of a foolish man, When you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge. • (Prov 14:7 TLB) If you are looking for advice, stay away from fools.

  11. The wise man looks ahead. • (Prov 14:8 NKJV) The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, But the folly of fools is deceit. • (Prov 14:8 TLB) The wise man looks ahead.The fool attempts to fool himself and won't face facts.

  12. Fools make light of sin. • (Prov 14:9 NKJV) Fools mock at sin, But among the upright there is favor. • (Prov 14:9 NIV) Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright.

  13. Feelings are hard to share • (Prov 14:10 NKJV) The heart knows its own bitterness, And a stranger does not share its joy. • (Prov 14:10 TLB) Only the person involved can know his own bitterness or joy--no one else can really share it.

  14. God establishes the upright • (Prov 14:11 NKJV) The house of the wicked will be overthrown, But the tent of the upright will flourish. • (Prov 14:11 TLB) The work of the wicked will perish; the work of the godly will flourish.

  15. Man cannot direct his own life. • (Prov 14:12 NKJV) There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. • (Prov 14:12 TLB) Before every man there lies a wide and pleasant road that seems right but ends in death.

  16. Laughter doesn’t cure a heavy heart. • (Prov 14:13 NKJV) Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief. • (Prov 14:13 TLB) Laughter cannot mask a heavy heart. When the laughter ends, the grief remains.

  17. We will be repaid for our deeds • (Prov 14:14 NKJV) The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above. • (Prov 14:14 NCV) Evil people will be paid back for their evil ways, and good people will be rewarded for their good ones. • (Prov 14:14 TLB) The backslider gets bored with himself;the godly man's life is exciting.

  18. Be a thoughtful person • (Prov 14:15 NKJV) The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps. • (Prov 14:15 TLB) Only a simpleton believes everything he's told! A prudent man understands the need for proof.

  19. Be careful how we live. • (Prov 14:16 NKJV) A wise man fears and departs from evil,But a fool rages and is self-confident. • (Prov 14:16 NASB) A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, But a fool is arrogant and careless. • (Prov 14:16 TLB) A wise man is cautious and avoids danger; a fool plunges ahead with great confidence.

  20. The importance of patience • (Prov 14:17 NKJV) A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of wicked intentions is hated. • (Prov 14:17 TLB) A short-tempered man is a fool. He hates the man who is patient.

  21. Foolishness gets more foolishness • (Prov 14:18 NKJV) The simple inherit folly, But the prudent are crowned with knowledge. • (Prov 14:18 NCV) Fools are rewarded with nothing but more foolishness, but the wise are rewarded with knowledge.

  22. The Evil will bow. • (Prov 14:19 NKJV) The evil will bow before the good, And the wicked at the gates of the righteous. • Adam Clarke: - They are almost constrained to show them respect;and the wicked, who have wasted their substance with riotous living, bow before the gates of the righteous - of benevolent men - begging a morsel of bread.

  23. God is with the righteous • (Psa 37:25 NKJV) I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.

  24. Treatment of the poor and the rich. • (Prov 14:20 TLB) Even his own neighbors despise the poor man,while the rich have many "friends." But to despise the poor is to sin. Blessed are those who help them. • (Prov 14:20-21 NKJV) The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor,But the rich has many friends. {21} He who despises his neighbor sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.

  25. Devising Evil or Good. • (Prov 14:22 NKJV) Do they not go astray who devise evil?But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good. • (Prov 14:22 NIV) Do not those who plot evil go astray?But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.

  26. Inheritance of the righteous • (Prov 14:23 NKJV) In all labor there is profit, But idle chatter leads only to poverty. • If a man work at his trade, he gains by it; if he cultivate the earth, it will yield an increase; and in proportion as he labors, so will be his profit: but he who talks much labors little, and a man of words is seldom a man of deeds. Less talk and more work, is one of our own ancient advices. -- Clarke

  27. Foolishness produces nothing good. • (Prov 14:24 NKJV) The crown of the wise is their riches, But the foolishness of fools is folly. • (Prov 14:24 NCV) Wise people are rewarded with wealth, but fools only get more foolishness.

  28. God will provide • (Prov 14:25 NKJV) A true witness delivers souls, But a deceitful witness speaks lies. • (Prov 14:25 TLB) A witness who tells the truth saves good men from being sentenced to death, but a false witness is a traitor.

  29. The Help of the Lord • (Prov 14:26 NKJV) In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge. • Adam Clarke : • From this, and from genuine Christian experience, we find that the fear of God is highly consistent with the strongest confidence in his mercy and goodness.

  30. You Aren’t Scared Are You? • I was teaching school in Dallas. It was near noon. It was so dark that the street lights came on. The PA. system came on. “May we have your attention for this announcement!” Then there was total silence as the lights went out and the thunder crashed. We moved into the hall way away from the wall of windows that faced the street. One of the young ladies moved close to me and said, “You aren’t scared are you, Mr. Pinon? -- I need to get right with the Lord!”
