The West in 1800 • Kentucky and Tennessee were states by 1800, and Ohio by 1803.
France and Spain were negotiating for control of the Louisiana Territory. • Britain also claimed the Pacific Northwest.
Spain had a chain of 21 missions laying claim to California.
Russians had settlements from north of San Francisco all the way to Alaska.
Napoleon and New Orleans • After the French and Indian War, France turned over Louisiana territory including New Orleans to Spain. • In a secret treaty Spain returned it to France (in exchange, Napoleon agreed not to invade Spain).
Just before Louisiana went back to France, Spain threatened to close New Orleans because of American smuggling. • Angry American westerners were agitating for war against France AND Spain, so Jefferson offered to buy New Orleans from Napoleon. • Napoleon offered to sell ALL of the Louisiana Territory to the U.S. (fund raising for a continental war).
Louisiana Purchase • Jefferson wanted to buy the land from Napoleon, but was afraid he didn’t have the authority (put this in the back of your computer brains for Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation). • On April 30, 1803, Congress approved the Louisiana Purchase for 15 million dollars.
Can somebody help us figure out what we just bought?Lewis and clark to the rescue
They assembled volunteers called the Corps of Discovery which became known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. • Clark had a slave, York, who became rather famous among the Indian groups because he was the first African American they had seen. • York was also a skilled hunter which impressed both the folks of the expedition and the Native Americans.
Up the Missouri River • Lewis and Clark set out from St.Louis in May, 1804. • They had one shallow riverboat and two pirogues (canoes).
What was their mission? • to find a water route across the U.S. to the Pacific (People had been looking for this since Pineda in 1519. It’s now almost 300 years later.)
Pike’s Expedition • Lewis and Clark were exploring the northern part of the Purchase. • Pike explored the southern part. • In 1806, Pike’s mission was to find the sources of the Arkansas and Red Rivers.
Pike’s group reached the Rocky Mountains following the Arkansas River. • Pike’s Peak (the tallest mountain in the U.S.) was named for him. • Pike turned south hoping to run into the Red river again, but ran into the Rio Grande where they were arrested by Spanish troops. • They were released in 1807
