Poetry Form • Form- the way it looks on the page. • LINE - a group of words together on one line of the poem. • STANZA - a group of lines arranged together The Night Before Christmas ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; Stanza
Sound Devices • Elements of poetry that use one type of sound related characteristic. • Rhyme • Rhythm • And more…..
Rhyme • Sounds that are alike at the end of words, such as mouse and house. • Near rhyming words- the words do not exactly rhyme. • As dry leaves that before • the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle sky; • .
Rhythm • The beat of the poem. • These are made up patterns of strong and weak syllables.

Figurative Language • Words and phrases that help the reader picture things in a new way. Example: More rapid than eagles
Imagery • Helps you paint a picture or imagine what is happening or what the poet is feeling. Example: The children were nestled all snug in their bed……
Simile • A comparison of two things using the words like or as. Example: His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
Metaphor • A comparison of two things WITHOUT using “as or like” Example: The clouds are fluffy pillows.
Personification • Giving an animal or an object human qualities. Example: The house glowed with happiness.
Practice • Split into groups of two • Read a poem • Try to find examples of the following: • Rhyming words • Imagery • Simile • Metaphor • Personification
