Prayer of the WeekWinfred Ernest Garrison: Mariner’s Prayer Thy sea, O God, so great; My boat so small,It cannot be that any happy fate; Will me befall,Save as Thy goodness opens paths for me,Through the consuming vastness of the sea. Thy winds, O God, so strong; So slight my sail. How could I cub and bit them on the long; and salty trail,Unless Thy love were mightier than the wrathOf all the tempests that beset my path? Thy world, O God, so fierce; And I so frail.Yet, though its arrows threaten oft to pierce; My fragile mail,Cities of refuge rise where dangers cease,Sweet silences abound, and all is peace. Thy sea, O God, so great,My boat so small.

When Jesus teaches that he “does not abolish but fulfills the law,” what “law” is Jesus referring to? (Mt 5:17) • The Law he is referring to is the Torah; also called the law of Moses; • The Law has been handed down through the history of Israel; • The Law contains binding laws of God that shape the community of the God of Israel (the rabbis speak of “613 mitzvot “ - commandments). • The core of law is the Ten Commandments, but it also includes other laws in the first five books of the Bible (the “books of Moses”)
What is Tanakh? What books make up the Torah? Tanakh refers to the parts of the Hebrew bible: • Torah: Law • Nabi’im: Prophets • Kotebim: Writings The Torah consists of five books: • Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers Deuteronomy • It is also called the Pentateuch, or the books of Moses.
“You have heard it said… but I say to you…”: Jesus offers transforms (“fulfills”) the Law, according to Matthew 5:17-48). • Law: “Thou shalt not kill.” • Jesus: do not be angry • Law: “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” • Jesus: do not even look lustfully; treat with honor • Law: You may “write a certificate of divorce…” • Jesus: Marriage is lifelong commitment • Law: “You shall not swear falsely…” • Jesus: Do not swear an oath at all (make everything you say absolutely truthful) • Law: “an eye for an eye” • Jesus: Turn the other cheek; give cloak; go another mile
Some ideas concerning Jesus “not abolishing” but “fulfilling” the Law. • The Law remains valid; • he does not reject it; • The Law is intensified, • he does not relax it; • The Law must be read according to its “spirit” as well as its “letter ”: • he extends it; • The Law is not just prohibiting evil, it is promoting good: • he focuses it on love of God and neighbor.
