Civil Rights Acts • Continued JFK’s move towards civil rights • Civil Rights Act of 1964 – banned racial discrimination on most private facilities open to public • Strengthened fed. gov’t’s power to end segregation in schools • Title VII – EEOC – barred employment based on race • Voting Rights Act of 1965 – outlawed literacy tests and sent federal voter registrars into several southern states • Due to Freedom Summer in Mississippi and “Selma to Montgomery” in Bama • Civil Rights Act of 1968 – no discrimination in public housing • 24th Amendment – no more poll taxes
