Marriage • Marriage is a serious, long-term commitment that many adults will decide to make. • Commitment is a pledge or promise. • Reasons for Marring • Love • Start a family • Companionship and comfort • Religious beliefs
Factors Affecting Marriage • Marriage is usually successful when two people • Work well together • Understand each others needs • Are willing to make any necessary adjustments • An adjustment is an adaptation or change in behavior
Factors Affecting Marriage • Factors that help a marriage succeed include: • Good communication • Similar values • Realistic expectations • Similar interests
Problems in a Marriage • It is very normal for a marriage to have problems. • Money • Work • Whether or not they want to have children • Differences in how they want to spend their free time
Problems in a Marriage Continued • When a married couple cannot resolve the issues/problems that they are having they may decide that separation or divorce is the right choice. • Divorce is a legal end to a marriage contract.
Teen Marriages • More than 60% of teen marriages end in divorce within the first 5 years. • Usually too young to understand what is important to them • Many teens marry because of an unplanned pregnancy • Caring for a baby is a serious responsibility and puts a great deal of stress on a teen marriage.
Choosing Parenthood A parent is the mother or father of a child. • Being a parent is NOT the same thing as parenting. • Parenting means the process of meeting a child's physical, mental/emotional, and social needs • Many people including grandparents, aunts and uncles, and babysitters, use parenting skills. • One of the most important responsibilities of parenthood is to provide unconditional love for a child. • Unconditional love is love without limitation or qualification. • In other words the child is loved whether he or she is good or bad, happy or cranky, healthy or sick.
Teen Parenthood – Risks Teen pregnancy and parenthood create health risks for both the young mother and the baby. • The teens body is still developing • Many pregnant teens do not get adequate nutrients • Lack education in how to take care of themselves during a pregnancy • Inadequate prenatal care • Low birth weight • Serious health problems for the baby
Teen Parenthood - Consequences • Parenthood is a challenging task for anyone, and especially difficult for teen parents. • Financial problems • Effects on education and career plans • Emotional stress • Effects on personal and social life
