  1. Open Systems and Standards ... approaches to interoperability Mike DeNamur Product Manager, Interoperable Systems Building Automation Systems Division

  2. Customer Issues Incorporate new technology faster Reduce operating costs - energy - manpower - maintenance “Open” Integrate more of my buildings control systems Help Manage Information Easy to reconfigure Comfortable and safe environment Save Energy Consolidate Operators Stations Single responsibility Freedom to select vendor and products Competitive bids Cost effective

  3. Why is Interoperability an Issue? • Microelectronic control technology has given birth to the issue • Manufacturers have given owners good cause to require a “trump card”

  4. Customers’ Desire Flexibility to choose the best products, the best application knowledge and the best service from a variety of suppliers to meet their evolving building control needs . . . in a cost effective manner

  5. Definitions Interface Ability for products not originally designed to work together, to share information. InteroperateDigital communications between products designed independently to the same communication standard. InterchangeAbility for multiple vendors' products to functionally replace each other on the same communication network

  6. Delivering Solutions Interface Interoperate Interchange Yesterday’s Solutions

  7. PC-2 Building Controller Integrator Unit Controller

  8. Delivering Solutions Today’s interface strategies will evolve to embrace open, standard systems over time as products become available. The best way to meet customer requirements is to provide true, open standard building management products and solutions.

  13. Enabling Technologies • Not BACnet vs. LonMark! • Both will be needed and used to deliver solutions to interoperability for our industry

  14. Sponsored by ASHRAE • Developed with input from a cross section of the industry • Adopted as ASHRAE / ANSI Standard 135 • BACnet standard defines common objects, properties and application services. • Active committee with “to do” list including ... • Conformance test • Additional standard objects • Define better methods of specification

  15. BACnet Objects Analog Input Analog Output Analog Value Binary Input Binary Output Binary Value Calendar Command Device Event Enrollment File Group Loop Multi-State Input Multi-State Output Notification Class Program Schedule

  16. LonTalk protocol offered by Echelon Corporation as technical solution • Packaged on chip called Neuron • Shaped by LonMark Association to insure interoperability • LonMark Standard Network Variable Types (SNVTs) and Profiles define standard uses of protocol • Work underway to recognize LonMark as international standard.

  17. Enabling Technologies • Not BACnet vs. LonMark! • Both will be needed and used to deliver solutions to interoperability for our industry • BACnet for building system interoperability • LonMark for unit controller interoperability

  21. Specifying Interoperability • Evaluate why to specify interoperability • Not as simple as “... shall be BACnet compatible” • Specify protocol and acceptable physical media “... standard BACnet objects over ARCNET or Ethernet LAN” • Clearly define interoperable points • add “interoperable” column to point list • Specify functionality of interoperable data “... display on graphics for status and control”

  23. Trane’s Commitment • 1993 press release in support of BACnet • Early adopter of BACnet • Native BACnet application • Coincident with Tracer Summit product development • Participation in SSPC-135, GPC-13, BACnet Interoperability Consortium and LonMark Association

  24. Trane’s Approach • Interoperability via standard protocols • System level interoperability • facilitates competitive bidding of BAS • convenient method of assigning responsibility for proper system control and maintenance • provides interoperability for legacy systems

  25. Trane’s Approach • Unit level interoperability presents opportunities, but requires more sophistication • commissioning, longterm maintenance issues • requires system integrator with tools and knowledge to make components function as systems • offers less firewalls than system level interoperability

  26. Interoperable Products • Tracer Summit BACnet implementation • Building Control Unit (BCU) • Native BACnet device • Supports both ARCNET and RS-232 BACnet • Also provides gateway to legacy unit controllers • PC Workstation • Native BACnet device • ARCNET and RS-232 BACnet

  27. Interoperable Products • Tracer Summit BACnet functionality • Status, control, alarm mgmt, scheduling • Continuing to evaluate the possibilities presented by LonMark
