Healthy Kitchens Project (USAID-Winrock International) • Introduction of improved Inkawasina stove – modified Justa-style stove with locally-made “Rocket” elbow • Goal: 80% reduction in key pollutants responsible for health impacts ~ particularly of women and children ~ among 600 households from the district

  3. Location: Inkahuasi District • Department of Lambayeque • Ferreñafe Province • Villages: Uyurpampa, Tungula, Amusuy y Wasiqaj • Altitude: >3000 meters

USAID-Winrock Project • Complementary aspects: • awareness raising of health impacts of IAP • formation of Environmental Health Committees • training of community promoters, entrepreneurs (potters, stove builders) • locally-appropriate micro-credit scheme • Team: • T.A. and oversight: Winrock • Field Implementation: NGO Centro ECO • IAP monitoring: Swisscontact • Spirometry: Dr. Jay Smith

Results to Date Awareness, promotion, behavior change • EH Committees formed in 33 communities, comprising 3 EH Associations • 100+ volunteer promoters trained, using didactic materials • Daily radio spot for 1 month • 25 Healthy Kitchen competitions Micro-credit • 430 animal modules distributed • >150 repaid

  6. Results to Date Capacity building • 2 local potters, 21 stove builders trained • 2 Retained Heat Cooker workshops for 28 women and men; 4 RHCs raffled Technology • 315 stoves installed • First local kiln built, 15 elbows fired in Uyurpampa (municipal center)

Conclusions from Prelim Results • Overall intervention has significantly reduced PM and CO in the majority of hh • Goal of 80% reduction surpassed in over 70% • Cannot attribute reductions exclusively to stoves and behavior; new kitchen spaces may also have improved ventilation • Several contributing factors observed for cases of increased pollutants • Structural • Behavioral

Next Steps • Implementation winding down by June 2007; emphasis on sustainability of micro-credit • More comprehensive analysis in 2007 • Follow-up on structural and behavioral modifications (Centro ECO, Winrock) • Follow-up IAP monitoring in August 2007 (Swisscontact) • Health symptom monitoring: additional data collection? • Huge potential for replicating successes, having large-scale impact on IAP and quality of life!
