Invention of the “Ribbon Microphone” • The ribbon Microphone was invented in the early 1920’s-1930’s • Who invented it? Dr. Walter H. Schottky & Erwin Gerlach
Where and How the Microphone is Used. • How: the ribbon is vibrated by sound pressure within a powerful magnetic field, the movement of the ribbon makes a figure 8 pattern. • Where: Broadcasting and recording stages or interviews. They are used for loud rock music, and stage use. Often used in pairs to produce the Blumlein pair.
Special Features • The voltage output of older ribbon microphones is typically low compared to a moving coil microphone • They are prized for there ability to capture high frequency detail
Type of Directionality • They have a bi-directional pick-up pattern. • Also they can be considered to have cardioid, hyper cardioid, Omnidirectional and variable polar patterns .
Why is it important to Broadcast Video & Production? • One of the main microphones used for the things it can do, but many people have stopped using them like they did back when it was first invented. • It also is important for how it captures sound, and sound quality.
