Now that you have identified testable from non-testable questions, the next step is……
How do I write my own testable question? Ask your 4 questions. (The 4 Step Process)
1. What materials are readily available to conduct an experiment on pillbugs? • Scales • Thermometers • Beakers • pH paper • Colored paper • Water • Vinegar • Heat lamps • Graduated cylinders
2. How do pillbugs act? • Roll up in ball • Drink from anus • Hide under rocks • Eat their own poop • Breathe through gills • Crawl • Shed their skin • Carry eggs in brood pouch • Turn blue when sick
3. How can you change the set of materials in #1 to affect the action in #2? Water • Temp • Quantity • Foreign substance • pH Light • Temperature • Amount (intensity) • Direction • color Beaker • Size • Contents • Clean Paper • Type • Color • material • Size • texture
4. How can you measure the response of the pillbug to the changes in #3? • Time them • Measure their length • How fast they role up • How fast they crawl • Measure their shape/size
Let’s write our testable question… Format: How does (pick a change in #3) affect (pick an action in #2)? Example: How does the type of paper affect the speed of the pillbug?
Homework • Write 3 more testable pillbug questions using the 4 step process on looseleaf.

The dependant and independent variables should be clearly stated • Make sure your hypothesis is "testable.“ • A hypothesis explains why you anticipate the outcome you have stated

Re-write this into a hypothesis Ladybugs are a good natural pesticide for treating aphid infected plants. Hypothesis: If I treat the plants with ladybugs, then the number of aphids will decrease because ladybugs are good natural pesticides.

Group Work Directions In groups of 3, • Select one of the questions & hypotheses you wrote on the slip of paper Would you consider it to be a “testable question”? Why or why not? • Turn that question into a testable question and write it on a sheet of looseleaf with all your names • Explain how that question qualifies as a testable question • Turn your group’s testable question and hypothesis in to me for review. • You have 5 minutes to complete this task.

Steps should be written in complete sentences and numbered in sequential order. 3. Should be written in the 2nd person as if you are talking to the reader.

Bell-ringer(with your table partner, 5 minutes) • Read your partner’s procedure for making a PB & J sandwich and do EXACTLY what they say, pretend like you are making the sandwich. • When finished, answer this question in your composition book: Did you find it easy or difficult to follow your partner’s directions? Explain why.

Group Directions(20 minutes) • Make revisions to your TESTABLE QUESTION and HYPOTHESIS if needed. • In your composition books, work with your other group members to write a detailed step by step PROCEDURE for your pill bug experiment. Be sure to list the MATERIALS you need. • When you are finished, show your MATERIALS & PROCEDURE to your teacher for approval. • You need APPROVAL before conducting your experiment. • Hand your teacher a half sheet of paper with all your names and the MATERIALS you need.
