Application vs. Anchor Task Application problem: Students solve a problem using mathematical knowledge that they already know. Anchor Task: Students solve a problem where the solution pathway is not immediately apparent. They may need to learn additional mathematics in order to solve the problem.

Anchor Task Template Develop Mathematical Intuition 1 Students will be presented with a context or situation where they will be asked to guess or predict: “What happens next?”
Anchor Task Template Explore the Task 2 Students will explore the task’s context, make observations, and gather relevant information.
Anchor Task Template Model with Mathematics 3 Students will organize the information with tables and graphs. They will then mathematically model the situation with diagrams, numerical quantities, variables, expressions, and/or equations.
Anchor Task Template Apply the Mathematical Model 4 Students will formulate evidence-based predictions based on their multiple representations. They will evaluate their original guess.
Anchor Task Template Communicate Mathematical Reasoning 5 Students will precisely summarize their mathematical reasoning in words. They will share their own solution pathway and critique the reasoning of others.
Anchor Task Template Formalize the Mathematics 6 The teacher will use direct instruction to generalize the various student approaches. The mathematics will be formalized in a rigorous manner, as required by the content standards.
Anchor Task Template Extend the Mathematics 7 The teacher and students can extend the discussion, pushing the mathematics above and beyond the learning targets of the task.
