  1. Making dua to Allah is not an option, but a necessity Literally the word Dua means “to call upon.” In Islam Dua or supplication means to address Allah (SWT) with praise, thanksgiving, hope, and to mention one’s needs.

  2. Etiquette for making Dua. Just like when we speak to a dignitary, or head of a state, we use certain language; follow the protocol to get proper attention and response. Similarly there are formulas and language taught by the Quran, the Prophet (S.A.W.) and his progeny, and the Imams to make Dua. The guidance from the Quran, the Prophet and the Imams (A.S.) about making Dua can be summarized as follows:• Address Allah (SWT) directly and mention your needs, difficulties and distresses.• Praise and glorify Allah before making the Dua. Seek His nearness and good pleasure; and remember that making Dua is also an act of worship.• Before and after making Dua send peace and blessings on the Prophet and his progeny peace be upon them all

  3. Making dualets us seek Allah’s attention. Allah (SWT) has commanded in Quran that we should make Dua to Him. .It has been reported that the prophet (S.A.W.) related that Allah (SWT) says: “O My servants, all of you are misguided except him whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance, and I will guide you. All of you are poor except whom I enrich, so ask Me for riches, and I will provide for you. All of you are sinners except him whom I release, so ask Me to forgive you, and I will forgive you.”

  4. “And your Lord says: Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to ask Me, will surely find themselves in Hell-in humiliation.” 40: 60.

  5. “And when My servants ask Thee (O’ Prophet) about Me, then verily I am near, I answer the prayer (Dua) of the supplicant when he beseeches unto Me. So let them hear My call, and believe in Me, so that they may be led right.” S. 2: 186

  6. “Duais higher form of worship.Dua can change fate” Al-Tirmidhi narrated that Al-Nu’maanibnBasheer (RA) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say on the minbar: “Dua is worship.” Then he recited the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “And your Lord said: Invoke Me [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) and ask Me for anything] I will respond to your (invocation)…”

  7. Not making Dua makes Allah angry • The Prophet (SAW) said: • “Whoever does not ask from Allah, He becomes angry with him.” • “And your Lord says: Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell-in humiliation.” 40: 60

  8. we should NEVER let go of making dua to Allah swt. One should not say “this can not happen.” Nothing is beyond the reach and the power of Allah (SWT). He is most generous and full of mercy.

  9. Acceptance of dua is a great favor from the Almighty Allah • it’s only logical for us to thank Him for his blessings and bounties.

  10. Mistake We make after dua is answered • Unfortunately it is common for many of us to forget the time, when we were desperately calling on Allah for His help, and get so carried away with enjoying the results, that we forget remembering Allah and thanking Him for His grace.

  11. Lose hope in the effectiveness and powers of our Dua. About the matter of Dua’s not being answered. Ibn al-Jawzi in one of his books commented . I think part of the test is when a believer supplicates and receives no response, and he repeats the dua for a long time and sees no sign of a response. He should realize that this is a test and needs patience.

  12. Dua’sbeing accepted • It was narrated that Faddalahibn ‘Ubayd said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard a man making dua after his prayer, but he did not send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “This man is in a hurry.” Then he called him and said to him or to someone else: “When any one of you has finished praying (and makes dua), let him start by praising Allah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then after that let him ask for whatever he wants.” Al-Albani said: it is a saheehhadeeth. (SaheehSunan al-Tirmidhi, 2765.

  13. Psychological and spiritual benefits of making Dua. a) It increases the faith of the supplicant, who acknowledges the fact that Allah (SWT) is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and is the ultimate recourse.b) It gives hope and the strength to the distressed soul, and saves from despair.c) It brings the supplicant closer to the Creator, strengthening the bond between them.d) It increases humility, which in turn increases piety.e) It curbs ego and vanity.
