  1. URLs http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

  2. URL - Uniform Resource Locator • URL is another way of saying ‘web address’. • There are at least 3.5 billion websites in existence. • Although there are billions of websites, each one has a unique URL. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

  3. What makes up a web address though?

  4. Hypertext Transfer Protocol http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons • http:// appears at the beginning of all URLS. • Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the set of rules which enables a computer to read a web page. • Sometimes it contains an ‘s’ – https:// The ‘s’ stands for secure. You should always look for this when paying for goods online. Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

  5. www – World Wide Web http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons • www stands for ‘World Wide Web’. All websites used to include this, but nowadays some companies choose not to. Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

  6. Domain type http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons • The letters immediately after the company name show the domain type. This can give us information about who made or owns the website. • For example: .org is an organisation. Charities and other not-for-profit companies use this. .co is a company (not American). .me is a domain type designed to be used for personal websites. 7. Country type http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons • We can usually tell where a website originates from these two letters. .fr France .br Brazil .ie Ireland .es Spain (España) .de Germany (Deutschland) Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

  8. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Path to file or resource • Everything that comes after the country type refers to the page within the website that the URL is pointing at. • In the example above, the path is /cartoons. This means that this URL is for the page on the BBC website which contains cartoons. • The path is normally separated from the site’s domain name with a / (forward slash). 9. Domain name http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons • The next part of a URL is the website’s domain name. • Domain names have to be bought. Once a person or organisation has bought a domain name, no one else can use it because each URL has to be unique (meaning the only one!). Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation
