Hang SevenCritical Design Review • Sierra Williams, Lucas Migliorini, Abby Caballero, Chase Goodman, Paul Smith, Becca Lidvall, Ethan Hollenbach, Nikhil Desai • October 18th, 2012
Mission Overview • Objective • Measuring Gamma Radiation as Altitude Increases • Testing the effectiveness of aluminum and carbon fiber on reducing radiation levels
Why do this? • Determine the trend in gamma radiation on earth, as the altitude increases • Test the effectiveness of materials currently used in aircrafts • Discover the altitude where the radiation can be detrimental to human health
Hypothesis • We predict the gamma radiation will raise linearly as the altitude increases • The aluminum and carbon fiber will both reduce radiation levels to a non-lethal amount • The aluminum will block more radiation than the carbon fiber
Design Structure • Foam core • Hexagonal • Centripetal force • Equipment • Arduino Uno • To tell the machinery in the Balloon Sat what to do • Collection of Data • Control of Geiger counter and Camera • Storage of Data • Sensors for humidity, condensation, and temperature • Camera • Canon SD780 to capture the majestic earth in pictures and videos Arduino

Biggest Worries Hardware Structural -The G’s after the balloon pop -Integrity of the structure -Condensation inside the -BalloonSat -Temperature -Sensors failure -Electrical failure -Overheating -Faulty programming -Geiger counters not working
Test Plan • Payload Test Plan • Structural tests • Hardware test • Geiger counter tests - Physics Department • Payload Tests Completed • Camera hardware test • Arduino sensor tests (humidity, temperature, pressure, accelerometer) • Tests that will be preformed and completion date • Whip test 10/27/12 • Drop test 10/27/12 • Kick test 10/27/12 • Hardware tests 11/11/12 • Power tests 11/11/12 • Cold Test 11/12/12
Predicted Results • The Geiger counter that is not protected will read substantially higher radiation than the protected Geiger counters • The Geiger counter that is not protected will reach a lethal level • The Geiger counter with an aluminum cover will read less gamma radiation than the Geiger counter with carbon fiber cover
