  2. Public Opinion in a Democracy • What might one think the role of public opinion should bein a democratic nation? • Why is this not the case in our republic? • When should public opinion be taken into more/less account when making government decisions?

  3. What impact can polls have? • Random Sample • Remember: If you don’t believe in sampling, the next time you go for a blood test, tell them to ‘take it all.’ • Question wording/order/answers • Conclusions drawn?

  4. Issues with polls… • Elon is a religious university; • 60% of the answers are related to government control vs. 20% are the opposite choice.

  5. What is the impact of each of the following on political ideology and public opinion? • Family/upbringing? • Has party ID of family strengthened or weakened? • Religion? • Catholics vs. Protestants vs. Jews • Social status = democratic party, but more prosperity over time leads to more conservatism • Men and women • The “Gender gap” • Education • See if you can “parse out” these factors when researching your polls…
