Prosperity in the 1920’s“for some” • Immediately after WWI, economic slump in Canada • No longer demand from Europe for Canadian goods • Greatest impact felt in Maritimes and on the prairies • Goods/services scarce during war because industry mainly produced wartime goods • This drove up prices for everyday goods
Prosperity in the 1920’s • Wages did not match prices so many were unemployed • Around 1923, Central Canada, BC, and the Prairies began to recover. Why? • Increased manufacturing • Mining – (Changing Technology, Eg. Electricity) • Agricultural production • Trade with USA
Economic DeclineMaritimes/Newfoundland • Economic boom of Central Canada, the prairies, and BC did not reach this region of the country. Why? • Increased demand for shipbuilding • Increases in freight rates • Distance from markets • Lack of hydroelectricity • Reliance on Natural resources • Tariffs raise by the USA
