Mac Bethad mac Findlaích • Known as “The Red King” the king of the Scotts. • His name is derived meaning "son of life". It, however, does not have any meaning of affiliation to family, but instead carries an implication of “righteous man” or "religious man". • Macbeth was the cousin of Duncan I who he succeeded. • The first king of Scotland to introduce feudalism to Scotland. 19th Century Portrait of Macbeth
The Scottish Play • Macbeth is a mighty and ambitious warrior, one of the leaders of Duncan’s army. • He is a Thane of Glamis. • He hears a prophecy that he will be king one day. • He is elected king of Scotland, but he became a cruel and unjust ruler.
Compare • Both were great warriors on the battlefield. • They were kings of Scotland. • They each killed their predecessor to the throne. • Both were killed in the field of battle.
