The Legend of the Pineapple A Philippine Folktale on how the pineapple came to be.
Once upon a time there was a pretty little girl called Pina who was pampered by her mother as an only child.
Pina was a nice little girl. Everything her mother told her to do, she did them. She always believed that others are more important then herself.
As Pina, grew older, she became naughty, lazy and mean. From them on she became very spoiled. Because she was influenced by the people around her.
Pina, always had low grades from then on. One day, her mother, became so ill, she could hardly move her body.
When Pina’s mother was sick, she relied on Pina, to help her, that was really tough, because Pina was always lazy.
If Pina’s mother asked her to do 1 thing, she would say, “ You have legs, you do it, lazy old grandma.” Pina’s mother, was heartbroken…. She felt a rock hit her heart and crushed it. She always thought in her mind.. Why she even took the time to raise such a lazy child.
One day, Pina’s mother was so upset, that she was sobbing and crying her tears out. Pina came home after school, and Pina’s mother asked, “ where have you been? Pina replied “ none of your business… I don’t ask about you're life don’t ask about mine.”
Pina’s mother felt she doesn’t deserve to be on the world, if no one gives her the respect, she gives other people. If only she could move, she would find out about Pina’s social life.
One afternoon, Pina’s mother was so hungry because she hasn’t been eating for 4 days, because of Pina’s laziness not bothering to cook for her mother. So she asked Pina to make Lugaw.
Pina’s mother, told her she would just put some rice in a pot, pour some water in with it, add a pinch of sugar, and leave the mixture to boil for a while. But still, Pina refuses to cook.
Pina’s mother told her it was so simple. So… Pina started cooking. She gathered everything up, but she couldn’t find a ladle.
Pina asked her mother where the ladle was, and she replied with the kitchen utensils, and she still could not find it.
She told her mother, she could not find it anymore, and her mother replied, “ I WISH YOU HAD A THOUSAND EYES, SO YOU WOULDN’T HAVE TROUBLE FINDING ANYHTING.”
Soon enough, her mother didn’t hear Pina, for 2 days. Her mother kept screaming, “ PINA! PINA!” But still no one replied. Her friends heard her terrified screaming, and thought what was wrong.
Pina’s mother, had told them that she had been missing for 2 days. Her friends said she would be back in a few weeks, but still, she did not show up.
Pina’s mother, eventually was clean from illness. She was making posters, bill boards, so she could find Pina.
When Pina’s mother, cleaned her backyard, she spotted a yellow plant that smelled sweet, with a thousand eyes.
Pina’s mother brought it in her house , and examined it. It felt bumpy. She had eventually remembered that she wished Pina had a thousand eyes, when she couldn’t find the ladle, and realized it had been Pina.
Her mother, eventually grew a pineapple tree, in honour of her daughter. The tree was strong, and is still growing until now, and giving us juicy and sweet pineapple’s.
From then on, Filipino's call it “ pinya” or pineapple, in honour of Pina.
