Escape From Troy and Dream of Italy • Aeneas and some of his people escape from troy as it is overtaken by invaders • They sail westward towards Italy (per his dream’s suggestion) to create a new homeland. • Encounter friends who advice them to land on the west side of Italy. (south of Sicily).
Sicily and the Cyclopes • Land on the southern tip of Sicily to rest for the night when they encounter a Cyclops. • They manage to escape and sail out to sea when Juno command Aeolus to attempt to sink the ships with his power over the winds. • Neptune was unsatisfied with the effect on the ocean and calmed the seas, allowing the Trojans to land on shore in Africa.
Dido • The Trojans are advised by Venus to go to Carthage to rest and recover. • There Aeneas meets Dido the queen, Venus tells cupid to make her madly fall in love with Aeneas. • The gods advise Aeneas to leave Carthage and travel to Italy, this breaks Dido’s heart and she takes her own life.
The Sibyl of Cumae and the Task • He must go to the cave of Sibyl of Cumae when he reaches Italy, here he is told he must journey into the underworld. • On his journey to the underworld he must pass ghosts, Cerberus (the three headed dog), and Charon the ferryman. • Some of the ghosts Aeneas encounters in the underworld are his father and Dido.
Sailing to Italy and the Wrath of Juno and Alecto • When the arrive in Italy they are greeted by the Latins, Latinus (the king) is excited by Aeneas’s arrival hopeful that he will marry his daughter. • Juno is enraged by Aeneas’s success and summons Alecto, one of Hade’s furries. • Alecto and Juno caused the queen of the Latins, the king of the Rutulians, the king of the Turnus, and the surroundings townspeople to hate Aeneas and his men.
Winning Lavina, Enemies made, and help from the gods/Evander • To win Lavina he must battle Turnus, Mezentius, and Camilia. • Father timber, God of the Roman river tells him to retreat to Evander’s Kingdom. • There he leaves the bulk of his men behind as he seeks reinforcements from the Etruscans with his and Evander’s most elite soldiers.
Nisus and Euryalus • While Aeneas is seeking reinforcements Turnus launches a major offensive attack. • The Trojans need to get word of the attack to Aeneas and the two bravest soldiers Nisus and Euryalus attempt to sneak past enemy lines. • Euryalus is captured and instead of fleeing Nisus tries to rescue him and they are both killed.
Marriage to Lavinia and Gifts to the World • Aeneas returns with reinforcements and after many losses on both sides meets Turnus in single combat. • Aeneas kills Turnus and wins Lavina’s hand in marriage. • There gifts to the world was the creation of the great Roman empire.
Motifs and Themes • Theme: Rags to riches/transformation- Because Aeneas is able to escape the destruction of troy with few others and create an entire new empire, Rome. • Motif: Guilt and Redemption- Because Aeneas must redeem himself and the Trojans by forming a new Empire.
