Virgil • Born on October 15th, 70 B.C.E. • In Northern Italy • Was a Gaul • Father was a prosperous land owner • Became a roman citizen in 49 B.C.E. • Roman poet • Aeneid • Unfinished, Virgil wrote 3 lines each day
Part 1 • Aeneas has a dream • Says he must sail to Italy • Get attacked by Harpies, they escape • Helenus tells Aeneas where to land on Italy • Juno learns Aeneas’s descendants will found a city and will destroy her favorite city, Carthage • Giant storm sent by a god, Aeneas sent off course, Juno want Aeneas to love Dido
Part 2 • Venus helps Aeneas leave Dido, Dido dies • Aeneas goes to underworld to see father • Need to find Golden Bough • Father tells Aeneas to make new home in Italy • Latinus welcomes Aeneas to Italy • Aeneas’s son kills popular horse among Latins • b/c of Juno making Alecto break up marriage and makes Aneas’s son kill horse
Final Part • Rutulians and Latins fight Trojans b/c of killed horse • Aeneas tries to find allies (Etruscans) • Huge offense from Turnus • 2 people go over enemy lines to tell • 1 is captured, other tries to save him, but both die • Aeneas… • and Turnus face off, Aeneas wins • marries Lavinia • Founds Roman People
Summary • Aeneas was destined to found Romans • Was harder than it should have been b/c of Juno • He did, even though Juno tried to stop Aeneas
