What is Mellitus • Also known as Diabetes, it is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by the inability to produce or respond to insulin and thereby having difficulty maintaining glucose in blood.
Autoimmune • Destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas • Lack of insulin leads to an increase in blood and urine glucose levels. • Insulin is a hormone used to regulate high blood sugar
Treatments • There is no known cure for Type 2 diabetes • Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet • Type 2 is treated with weight reduction along with insulin and a diabetic diet. • The American Diabetes Association has provided information for a diabetic diet
