The NORMAN network on emerging substances and its activities in support of water policies in Europe Workshop on Emerging contaminants in European waters Copengagen, 5 - 6 December 2011
NORMAN members – 2011 50 members from 19 countries (incl. 2 from Canada)
NORMAN members – 2011 50 members from 19 countries (incl. 2 from Canada)
Main targeted policies • Water Framework Directive • Support of the DG ENV WG-E and CMEP activities • River Basin Specific Pollutants • New priority substances • Quality and comparability of results at EU scale • ... • Marine Strategy Framework Directive • Upgrade of Drinking Water Directive - Water Safety Plans • REACh • Occurrence in the environment
Chemical monitoring and emerging pollutants (CMEP) - sub-group of WG E • “The NORMAN network will be closely associated to this activity, as well as other relevant research initiatives on emerging pollutants. • Reliable and EU-wide information about levels and occurrences of emerging environmental pollutants which eventually can support the identification of new priority substances. • Information on performance of existing analytical methods for emerging pollutants and any other information deemed relevant for the activities of the WGE on this field. • Information exchange on the use of alternative effect-based monitoring methods (e.g. biomarkers, bioassays, EDA) needed for investigative monitoring and to better evaluate the link between chemical and ecological status and the effects of mixtures of pollutants and emerging pollutants.”
What could be the role of NORMAN in Europe? • Primary data source for emerging substances; • Oneof the main actors in proposing substances for environmental legislation; • Providing experiences, data and tools as a basis for the identification/prioritisation of substances of concern; • Contributing to the architecture of the European data centers dealing with chemicals • Definition of a harmonized data collection: reported parameters, QA/QC features; • Contributing to the creation of the early warning system for emerging pollutants and subsequent policy actions.
