Stages in coalition growth • Sunflower metaphor • Tuckman: Forming, storming, norming, performing • Wolff: forming, direction-setting, structuring, maintenance • All stages are necessary • Some are ugly and unpleasant for all involved
Barriers to effective coalitions • “Monopolies” • Prof Assns vs. WIC vs. Health Dept vs. mothers • Big city / capital city vs. everywhere else • “Secret sororities” • Closed e-lists, unpublicized meetings, little discussion • Fragmentation • Many scattered small groups working alone • Exclusion of relevant stakeholders • consumers / mothers / individuals / businesses
Effective strategies • Regular, predictable, & open meetings • CDC teleconference dates • Rotating locations • Commitment to consensus process • Common ground and purpose • Motivated lead agency • Communication & admin • Sometimes letting go • personal, historical baggage
John Wooden says… • “It’s amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.”
Remember… • When we fight among ourselves… • The formula companies laugh… • All the way to the bank.
USBC is committed to… • Building a network of state coalitions • Supporting “exemplary practices” • Providing communication tools • Increase/expand communication with states • Coalitions Electronic Forum has begun • www.usbreastfeeding.org • Continuing the momentum begun in 2006
