AGENDA 1: STRENGTHEN FRONTLINERS • The new Wildlife Conservation Act enforced in 2011 • Poaching of tiger: max US$166,000 and 5 years imprisonment • MIST based enforcement being implemented at Taman Negara NP and Endau Rompin NP by DWNP with the assistance of WCS, WWF & MYCAT • MIST based patrol and 1NRE interagency patrols to be expanded at 3 priority tiger habitats in 2014-15 • Additional staffing for DWNP in 2014 for law enforcement and Tiger Unit
AGENDA 2: CONSERVE TIGER HABITAT DEVELOPMENT OF ECOLOGICAL CORRIDORS South China Sea Straits of Malacca • Tiger habitats mainstreamed into national spatial plan – Central Forest Spine (CFS) • Protecting priority tiger habitats • Linking the priority tiger habitats • with rest of the tiger landscape • Developing 2 ecological corridors with 4 wildlife viaducts for safe movement of wildlife including tigers in 2014-15
DEVELOPMENT OF ECOLOGICAL CORRIDORS • 2ND ECOLOGICAL CORRIDOR • 3 Wildlife Viaducts being built • Linking Taman Negara NP with western forest complex • Cost: US$28 million • Implementation 2012- 2014 2 TITIWANGSA TAMAN NEGARA
DEVELOPMENT OF ECOLOGICAL CORRIDORS • 3RD ECOLOGICAL CORRIDOR • 1 Wildlife Viaduct being designed • Linking Belum State Park with southern forest complex • 19 Feb 2013: CFS Perak State Conference – State Government announced the designation of 20,000ha along highway as corridor • Monitoring of tiger and wildlife by DWNP & WWFM • Habitat enrichment by Forestry Department • Integrated Enforcement • Cost: US$18 million by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Malaysia • Implementation: 2013-15 3
INCORPORATING SGI FEATURES AT BELUM • Minimum specification of wildlife viaducts • Length : 60m and height: 8m • Near existing wildlife crossings • Habitat enrichment needed Minimum Height- 8 meters Viaduct Column Ground level 30 meters 30 meters • Feb 2013: Engineering design presented • Late 2013: Construction starts
AGENDA 3: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT • 2013: about 100 locals will be trained as licensed nature guides for parks • Funding: US$70,000 from the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia AGENDA 4: COLLABORATION AMONG TRCs • Belum State Park in Malaysia and Hala Bala PA in Thailand has been identified as trans-boundary PA • To be strengthened under the GEF funded PA Project in 2013-14 AGENDA 6: ACCELERATE FUNDING • Government: US$45 million for Ecological corridor; US$1.5 million for tiger survey at Taman Negara NP • UNDP GEF Funding for PA US5.6 million 2013-2019; for CFS US$9.6 million and expected to commence in 2014 • WWF-M and WCS-M sourcing funding for national tiger survey in 2014-15
