  1. Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Adult Participants 44 oil spill affected adults from Buras and nearby cities. Sample primarily Caucasian (54.5%) with 15.9% Asian and 29.6% other ethnicities. Child Participants 74 oil spill affected children from southern Louisiana cities (e.g., Houma, Lafitte, Grand Isle, etc.) Sample primarily Caucasian (70%) with 30% other ethnicities.

  3. Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Adult Results Annual Income Before/After the Oil Spill: • A paired samples t-test revealed a significant difference in income before ($25,000 to $34,999, on average) and after the oil spill ($15,000 to $24,999, on average), t(36) = 6.365, p < .05.

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Adult Results Life Satisfaction Before/After the Oil Spill: 5.37 ~ “Slightly Agree” 3.33 ~ “Slightly Disagree” • A paired-samples t-test revealed a significant difference in total life satisfaction before and after the oil spill, t(39) = 6.18, p < .05, with lower life satisfaction following the oil spill.

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Adult Results • Perceived social support was a negativepredictor of anxiety and depression, such that as social support decreases, symptoms of anxiety and depression increase. • Family annual income since the oil spill may be a negativepredictor for depression and anxiety symptomatology, indicating that lower annual income may predict higher levels of depression and anxiety. • Current employment status was a positivepredictor of life satisfaction; individuals with higher levels of employment (i.e., full-time) are more satisfied with life.

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Child Results Rates of Depression: • Subclinical (“at risk”) Elevations - 4.1% • Clinical Range - 5.4% National 12-Month Prevalence of Major Depressive Episode = 8% Rates of Anxiety: • Subclinical (“at risk”) Elevations - 17.8% • Clinical Range - 5.5% National 12-Month Prevalence of Anxiety = 13%

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Child Results • Use of negative religious coping strategies was positively predictive of symptoms of anxiety and depression, with more use of negative religious coping predictive of higher levels of anxiety and depression. • Use of destructive coping strategies was positively predictive of anxiety and depression, indicating that more use of destructive coping strategies associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression. • Use of ameliorative coping strategies was positively predictive of levels of anxiety, such that more use of ameliorative coping strategies may actually lead to higher levels of anxiety.

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Child Results cont. • Use of diversion coping strategies was negatively related to depression, with more use of diversion coping leading to lower levels of depression. • Parent, adult, and sibling social support was negatively predictive of symptoms of anxiety and depression, with high levels of social support associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression. • Peer and relative social support was negatively predictive of levels of depression, such that higher levels of peer and relative social support leading to less symptoms of depression.
