Step 1- topic and preliminary thesis statement • Topic- I am interested in the history of Chicago-style Jazz from the 1930s to the 1960s. • Research Question- How did Chicago-style Jazz develop and what is its influence on American music? • Preliminary thesis- Chicago-style Jazz from the 1930s to the 1960s has a memorable style and sound that has impacted R and B, Hip Hop and Rap. The topic and thesis drive the working outline. The working outline determines the sources and the notes. Steps in the Research Paper Process

Step 2- Working Outline- historical Paper • Intro- grabber, transition, thesis • Body 1- the history of Chicago-style Jazz from the 1930s to the 1960s • Body 2- Specific Jazz musicians • Body 3- How Chicago-style Jazz impacts modern music- sounds and songs • Body 4- contemporary Rap, R and B and Hip Hop artists who owe their sound to Chicago-style Jazz. • Conclusion- restate thesis, sum up main points, leave reader something to think about and do Steps in the Research Paper Process

  3. Step 3- Research • Show print outs of research/minimum 3 articles • You should have highlights and underline marks on the articles. • Key the highlights/annotations in the margins for where they go on the outline. The research becomes the notes. Steps in the Research Paper Process

  4. Step 4- Sources • Easybib Source list – show the teacherfor the points. At this point, you must have at least 5 complete sources for the signature. • Source cards- (6sources) Complete citations • Printed source- Author. Title. Publishing Company. Place of publication, year of publication. • Online source- Author. Title. Webpage. Date of upload. Date of download. url. The sources determine the notes. Steps in the Research Paper Process

Step 5- Notes • Notes-Can be done electronically by way of an annotated bibliography, PowerPoint, MS Word notes, Google Docs, etc. Show the teacher 15 notes. • Note cards (Show 15 paraphrases, summaries or direct quotes). Upper left hand side of card, author or article. Upper right hand side of card, slug (place on outline the note will go.) The notes become the outline. Steps in the Research Paper Process

  6. Step 6- Firm thesis statement • Go back to Step 1. Are you happy with your research question and your preliminary thesis? If so, get signature and move on. • Go back to Step 1. Has your project changed as a result of your research? If so, change your topic and thesis to reflect this new direction. Get signature and move on. Steps in the Research Paper Process

  7. Step 7- Formal Outline • Go back to Step 2. • Expand each I, II, and III etc. to reflect a complete paragraph. • For every A there should be a B. For every 1, there should be a 2. The outline becomes the rough draft! Steps in the Research Paper Process

  8. Step 8- Rough Draft • Remove the formatting from the outline from Step 7. What you have left is the rough draft. • Double space the whole paper. Add more details to each body paragraph. • Make sure you have met the word count. • Cite each source that isn’t common knowledge. Steps in the Research Paper Process

  9. Step 9- Parenthetical Notations • Parenthetical notations- 3-5 or more on each page as needed. Change sources often. • (Smith), (Smith 22), (“Where is my Mind?”) • Never list just the URL. That is not a source. • Notations include: • Lead in to direct quote with documentation • Partial quote, synthesized quote, ellipses … • Paraphrase with documentation • Block Quote with documentation Steps in the Research Paper Process

  10. Step 10- Editing • Peer editing- have a friend, other teacher, or parent review your paper to be a second pair of eyes. • Use colored pen to correct errors. • Spell check, grammar check, check citations and content. • Has the thesis been proven? Steps in the Research Paper Process

  11. Step 11- Works Cited Page • Works Cited Page – Minimum of 6sources. (Play, Internet sources, e-mail or interview, video, audio, graphic image like a chart, graph, comic, drawing, illustration or picture) • Not just a URL. • Go back to Step 4. For an Easybib Works Cited page, just print it and attach it to the end of your paper. • For the cards method, word process each source onto a list appropriately and exactly. Alphabetize the sources.   12. Step 12-Formatting and Submission • Follow the formatting guidelines on the back of your check off sheet. • Submit the paper two ways. Post the paperto turnitin.com on or before December 12 to do an anti-plagiarism check. • Print out the paper, staple it and turn it into the box. • Late papers are not eligible for A’s. • No research paper will be accepted without a completed check off sheet. • Absent students must have excused absences to be eligible for an A. If absent, the paper is due first thing the next day the student is present in class. Steps in the Research Paper Process
