John Arthur LCLS Experimental Facilities DivisionJune 30, 2009 The Instrument Readiness Review Process
An IRR is… • Part of a layered approach for assuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of LCLS • Consistent with SLAC Guidelines for Operations • Chap. 23, Accelerator Safety Reviews and Unreviewed Safety Issues • Described in XFD document 030-00200-000 • Motivated by plans to add 6 major instruments for x-ray experiments at LCLS over 3-year period • A way to assure that all USI associated with new LCLS instruments have been identified and mitigated before starting commissioning of the instrument • A tool that will also be used for reviewing major changes to instruments after they are operational
An IRR is not… • A replacement for normal SLAC WPC • A replacement for the SLAC USI process • Appropriate for minor repairs or changes to LCLS instruments • Appropriate for review of each LCLS experiment
IRR Process • What is reviewed • Documentation • Physical inspection of instrument • Qualifications of staff • Product of review • List of documents reviewed • Record of presentations, interviews • List of review participants • Pre-start and post-start findings of review
How IRR process is used • Coordinated by Instrument Scientist • Takes place when instrument is nearly complete, but allows time to address pre-start issues • May require modification of SAD and/or ASE • Modified SAD must be approved by SLAC Director • Modified ASE must be approved by DOE SSO • After all IRR pre-start issues are closed, LCLS Director authorizes start of commissioning
Who is involved in IRR • Instrument Scientist coordinates • Radiation Physics group reviews shielding, beam containment issues • SLAC safety committees review issues in their areas • IRR committee has formal meeting to assess status of reviews, identify pre-start and post-start issues • Committee composed of experts from SLAC and other DOE labs • Invited by LCLS Director
Tentative schedule for LCLS IRR’s • AMO instrument mid-July, 2009 • SXR instrument March, 2010 • XPP instrument July 2010 • CXI instrument January 2011 • XCS instrument May 2011 • MEC instrument 2012 IRR for early test phase of instrument may occur earlier

AMO instrument Designed to focus LCLS x-ray beam, and study interactions between intense x-ray pulses and atoms or small clusters
AMO IRR status • Installation nearly finished • Working with safety committees • Collecting memos from committee chairs • Tentative date for IRR: July 15 • Choosing committee, organizing review
