ESTABLISHMENT STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR ESTABLISHING A C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Counselor must have a clear understanding of his/her role and function • Meet with administrators individually & collectively • Get a working understanding of the administrator’s leadership styles • What has been the administrators’ relationship to/with counseling/counselors • Make a clear case for how you can be a strong positive influence in fulfilling the overall mission of the school, i.e. AYP.

MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR MAINTAINING A C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Regular meetings- formal & informal • Ensure your visibility by participating/chairing committees, etc. • Finding a specific project the principal needs help with and volunteer to help
MAINTENANCE CONT’D MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK: • Consistently fulfilling your role • Advocating for all students in all the domains-academic, personal/social, career • Being a resource, consultant, confidante
IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR IMPROVING C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Find ways to include your administrators in the counseling program • Use your counseling skills to show empathy, a nonjudgmental attitude and support for your principal’s work load
IMPROVEMENT CONT’D MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK : • Use data to show/prove your (counseling program) reason for existence • Always reassure your principal that you both have the same end result in mind. • Be a team player • Be gracious and supportive
