Mentoring – origins • ‘Mentor’ – Geek mythology. Trusted by Odysseus to tutor his son, Telemachus • ‘experienced and trusted advisor or guide’ • ‘Mentor’ - wise all-powerful old man; actually the Goddess Athene in disguise
What is the role of mentor? • Nurturing & developing by experts (apprenticeships) • Induction by experienced colleague (business and management) • Inclusion and positive action (State sector & Business) • Learning & reflection, supported by colleagues; learn with & from each other; working on ‘real’ problems - ACTIVE
